Atheism 2.0

I just listened to Alain de Botton's TED talk called "Atheism 2.0" (couldn't figure out how to embedded the talk but I'm glad to see I could download it if I wanted to). The way he discusses atheism is fantastic. Often I find atheists so dismissive. In fact I'm not really religious at all and find many, many aspects of religion problematic. There have been countless horrible crime committed in the name of religion. BUT I can't dismiss that many people find comfort, positive direction, and  a supportive community through religion. I just cannot deny this. Are these people fooling themselves? I'm not to judge. Religion only becomes a problem for me when someone else makes it a problem. Tolerance, acceptance, and respect - these are quality, regardless of social/political/religious opinion, that are necessary for civil discourse. They has nothing to do with the substance of their argument/opinion and everything to do with the quality of their character. And when religion "works" properly, those positive qualities come out in abundance. When people use religion as a mean of oppression, control, and degradation, it merely a mirror of their interior life. Same could be same about capitalism and political correctness. Any system and social structure/code can be abused. No need to involve God at all.
