don't push me

I'm a little rattled. I've just received an email from my boss because someone complained about my performance at my job. Not good. So, to cheer myself up I'm going to post two songs:

Happy - the Rolling Stones
Fuck and Run - Liz Phair

The Stones song is off Exile On Main Street, while the Phair song is on Exile in Guyville. Everyone knows that when Phair's album came out it was hailed as "meta-album" because it was supposed to be a track by track critique of the Stones' album. Now, I admit I spent an evening comparing the two records and there isn't an exact corelation to the records. There seems, however, to be a relationship between these two songs because it seems like Phair is responding to Jagger.

"I need a love to keep me happy."
"It's fuck and run."

It's the distinction between two oppositing version of what love is. I guess I don't know what else to say except that sometimes the little things let us remember that the big things will crush us if we let them.

Also, I saw the Love Monkey show for the first time tonight. It featured some very awkward cameos from LeeAnn Rimes and Ben Folds. The show isn't exactly good, but it's about someone obsessed with music and it's got the guy from Ed so I'll probably watching it until they cancel it. What I did like was that everytime someone, in normal conversation, mentioned a song title he, the protagonist, pointed it out to them. I'd do that but I know that in real life it would be really annoying. Also, someone asked him his "all-time top five songs" and he couldn't answer it. How very High Fidelity. So I'm going to think about it, write it down, and maybe make a mixdisc with only those five songs on it. These won't be the songs that "define" me but the songs I really like. The songs that get stuck in my head and don't leave for days. These are the songs that I can remember hearing them for the first time and thinking, "wow."

I like that there's no visual in music. This isn't the only reason I like music, but it's nice. books, television, movies, art... these all require the use of your eyes. This is why I've never understood the need to see the band while the music is playing at a show. I stand where I stand because I know that's where the sounds is the best. In a good club, this spot usually has a good line of sight as well, but not always. I'll admit that standing looking at some dude's back for an hour isn't as exciting as watching the performer, but I'm short so I deal and make up reasons why it doesn't matter.
