once again I'm surfing around the 'net, what do I find... many, many sites with content "solely" for women (or girls... whatever you want to call them). Now, this isn't some kind "what are there some many girly site on the web" rants. I'm actually incredbily impressed with them. The couple that I visited, Hellfire and claptrap, were both excellent examples of what a website should be. They had interesting, well-written (not excellent, but good) articles, excellent designs (sometimes a little slow to upload, but I'm not sure if that's their fault or the server's. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt) and discussed various topics. There was lots of stuff to spend time looking at. So, why is this such a big deal? Is that I'm surprised that women made such an interesting website? No, that's not. I'm not living in the dark ages here. I might not agree with everything that radical feminists tell me, but I sure as hell can see the writing on the wall (also, I'm of the firm opinion that women, on the whole, are smarter than men... I don't want to get into the debate right now, but let's just say that women tend to be good at a lot of things while men specializes too much and that's the problem). In today's world, women have almost the same freedom as men to choose to their career (I say "almost" because I took sociology101 where they told me that and I'm not completely unaware of the world outside). What makes these sites a big deal is the difference they have. Most "men" sites often involved pictures of women in varying degrees of undress (or no dress) and are very specific to a certain category. There are every few sites that deal with a selection of issues that are "men's issues." This might have something to do with the history of gender relations. If men's interests historically have been politics, sports, philosophy, technology, etc. these issues/interests have had special names that we could categorize them under. Issues today known as "women's issues" have historically never been able to be put under one of these headings or rather men never put it under these headings. Thus, they got lump into the same category when they really have very little to do with each other. So, when you go looking for men's issues, there's very little on general interests of men because we can't figure out what specifically to call men's issues since it seems that these issues are spread about over many specialized areas of interest. Basically, all we can call "men's interests" and have it be somewhat generalizable is their desire for women (and I know there are gay men out there, but please just let it pass). Therefore, men's magazines and websites end up being nothing more than the glorification (or degradation) of women. Examples.... Maxim, Stuff, FHM, Details, etc. So, there we have it. Yeah, I know that there's fault in the logic here. I looked at independent women's sites while focusing on mainstream, comerical men's sites. I think my point is valid to a certain degree and I welcome someone to yell at me if they really want to because they find this offensive. It would show that you started thinking about the topic. Anyway, that's all folks. see ya
