On my ride home today I listened to Santogold's and Robyn's new album.
They are two very different albums. Both artists have been described as being the new M.I.A.
I don't know if the comparison is fair in both cases.
Santogold does feature the same producers but sounds more like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs than M.I.A.
Robyn's European dance music and Swedish pop pedigree shine through on several of her tracks.
Neither has M.I.A.'s third-world empowerment vibe.
Seems hipsters are latching on to these female artists because their music is good but they aren't cookie-cutter, pre-fabricated music industry insides... which is a total lie. Robyn was a teen pop star in the mid-90s and Santogold was an A&R rep before releasing this album. And no one can forget that M.I.A.'s family was somewhat rich, even if they have links to the Tamil Tigers. Santogold wrote songs for Ashlee Simpson's new album.
My verdict: Santogold had some good songs (the lead off track is killer) but overall I prefer Robyn's record. What can I say? I kind of like ABBA deep down in my heart of hearts... or the Cardigans. There's something about the Swedish people.
