Okay...

PopMatters has an article about the postmodern-ness of Wilco's classic album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I share the author's reluctant of classifying any rock n' roll album as "post-modern" because rock n' roll, as a genre, as obvious limits and a defined space that it inhabits. While several artists push the boundaries of the genre, they maintain ties to the always moving "core" of rock n' roll (does my reliance on the idea of a moving centre prove the post-modern aspect of rock n' roll in general?). YHF does rely very heavily on the theme of communication and this theme does play well into the theory of a post-modern record. When Jeff Tweedy talked about the record, he never mentioned post-modernism as an influence but that doesn't mean anything.

I think part of the reason people are obsessed with calling Yankee Hotel Foxtrot a post-modern album is because it is a drastic change from a band that was general viewed as an alt-country band. As some critics have said, if you don't like the new Wilco record you don't have to worry 'cause the next one will be completely different... like totally different. I'd like to see Radiohead make a folk record*.

*I'd like to apologize to Radiohead. In Rainbows is pretty awesome but you've still got some of the most annoying fans on the planet. If you're upset please watch this interview with Cookie Monster. It'll make everything better.
