I think the beer goggles affect is more than just the beer or smoke. I think this because I have given my phone number to someone to whom I'm not attracted to (as is the criteria listed in the article) but I did it because in the particular social setting, this person seemed pretty decent. i.e. they were the best looking of the choices around - which were all bad.
But the next day I realized that I didn't really want to talk to this guys, even if he was more attractive than his friends.
I also think that we're wired to respond to these social queues, so that if we live in a small community, we won't be so repulsed by all the males and never mate. We're trained to go for the best, even if it's slim pickings.
