I don't use bookmarks* when I read books, which causes all kinds of problems. I rely on my memory, which is a big problem because I don't have a good memory. This was made obvious today when I picked up the book I was reading, microserfs by Douglas Coupland, and realized I had missed about ten pages. What was even scarier was the fact that it didn't really make a different to the plot. Maybe I wasn't really paying attention to it very well, but still... I'm not a very good reader unless it's something that's very difficult, like philosophy or something.
*I also don't bend pages, leave books open on the spine, or anyway further damage the books I own even though I buy most of my books second-hand. I think this stems from my extensive comic book collection. If you collect anything that can be destroyed easily, you become a little paranoid about things lasting.

About this picture: it seems, according to Douglas Coupland, these things are distinctly Canadian.

I have this big thing against spine-creasing. I like my spines to be perfect and neat and without those horrible little furrows and white lines.
Also page-bending. Grr.
I do the memory thing, too, which usually leads to my reading the same pages again and again while I'm trying to find my place. . .
you need white vinegar in the picture... i know it's not 'distincly canadian' but i am NEVER going to the states w/out it again.... and i forgot to smuggle it from hooters.. thanks for reminding me.
ps. get outside - it's beautiful out!!!
