from both sides now
Exams are bad, whether you're the student or the teacher. Today I had to proctor three exams for the classes I teach, and I was so bored. I know it's harder on the students, but still... I didn't like it. You can't really do anything except make sure people aren't cheating, which isn't always possible to catch. Why is testing necessary? Because it's the easiest way to determine grades. At least that's what I'm starting to think.

I think it's exam's illusions you recall. Exam were awesome. They're way better than essays. On essays you're basically guaranteed of doing mediocre, but if you want to do well you really have to work hard.
But with an exam, you can study for days (which is less stressful than writing or doing problem sets for days, no question) then just do a brain dump at the exam.
Good times.
The only thing crappy about exams is that you actually have to be there at the appointed time, even if it's your only exam and it's at the end of the exam period.
