I just went to Chuck Klosterman's book reading at the Legendary Horseshoe Traven for his new book whose name I've totally forgotten. I have, however, read another one of his books, Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, which I enjoyed very much. Based on that book, I couldn't miss this reading (it also helped that it was free, always a nice touch). Essentially, Klosterman just told ancedote after ancedote. They were all funny and full of random references to popular culture.
Klosterman spent a lot of time talking about what he termed "big ideas," which were essentially his theories of cultural anthropology. Yeah, basically everything he said was things you learn in a third-year university course on popular culture except without all the references to academics. Now, I'm not trying to discount what he said, because everything he said was spot on. His language was more accessible and his style of speaking much more engaging. And it's always better when the examples being used aren't ten years old.
The highlight of the night, however, had to been Klosterman answering a question about the reference made him on the popular youth-centric show, The OC. That and when a young girl right in the front asked him what his favourite food was (mashed potatoes, if you're wondering) and he respond by making a reference to Weezer. It was awesome.
