I just rented the first collection of the Superman cartoon from the mid-90s. It's awesome. Not as good as the Batman series (which was rented out otherwise I would have gotten that) from the same period, but good nonetheless. It's interesting to compare it to other cartoons from the present. Whle the series was aimed at children, it didn't seem that child-ish to me. I don't know how to exactly describe it, but it seems that the creative behind the series made sure that old comic fans wouldn't be too upset with it. There also seems to be an emphasis on showing Lois Lane as a strong character. Yeah, she needs Superman to save her from time to time, but let's be clear on something, when Superman saves her it's from a forty-foot, nearly indestructable robot that only he can destroy. She usually is able to save herself from a henchman no problem. I often wonder if Lois is the more courageous of the two because she does heroic deeds without superpowers. I guess that's one way to read the cartoon. Either, the animation is good and the stories are well-done. I can't wait to get started on the second disc tonight (with a break from some One Tree Hill. Too bad Veronica Mars isn't on tonight*).
*note: two of the people who read this blog regularly have recently been introduced to these shows and enjoy them. I take pride in my television watching.
