I've been looking up stuff (reviews, interviews, etc.) of the Weakerthans, the greatest Canadian band ever (I know by saying that I'm going to have every Tragically Hip/Neil Young/Guess Who/Sloan fan on my ass, but those bands don't compare to the Weakerthans... except maybe Neil because he's been good for oh so many years - excluding his brief association with Preal Jam... but their prefromance at the MTV music awards several years back was pretty cool... oh, I'm so divide on this issue; not the issue of whether the Weakerthans are the better band, but rather if Neil is still cool even with his brief association with Pearl Jam. I think I'm going to have to say that Neil is still cool, but he's not as cool as he was before that moment of insanity which involved Pearl Jam and the CSN&Y reunion... Neil, they need you more than you need them. Wow, this is one long break... wonder if I'll ever get back to the Weakerthans after this?) and I've seen two or three mentions of the Weakerthans in connection with Blogs so I decide to rant about the Weakerthans so that others would find my Weakerthans story when they go looking for Weakerthans stuff on the Internet.
(That's possible the longest sentence I've ever written. The 7th grade English teacher would kill me if she ever saw that sentence)
Anyway, the Weakerthans... I've seen them live three times in concert and once in a live radio boardcast (if you want to check that one out click here then go to the radio section). I have yet to be disappionted by their preformance. Both of their albums, Fallowand Left and Leaving, are classics that everyone whose got a slight interest in modern music should own. The lyrics, especially on Left and Leaving, are strangely poetic (it's not really a poem set to music because John K. doesn't follow the rules, and he freely admits to not being a poet, but rather someone whose trying to be a poet. I think he's doing a pretty good job). All the reviews I read talked about the feelings of alienation and loss on the record. Yeah, those emotions are there, but there's also this feeling that everything's strangely okay. The world's full of problems, but that doesn't mean your life has to be the same way. There's some kind of light at the end of the road. You never get to that end, but every painful step away from the life you knew is one that's worth taking... or so you hope. There's definitely a lot of hope on this album; hope for a better world (through socialism), better interpersonal relationships, and better (fill-in the blank).
The Weakerthans were nominateed for a Juno, but ultimately lost to the New Pornographers. I personally think that the Weakerthans' album is better, but I can understand why the New Pornographers won. They have Neko Case, the international star whose probably the sexest/most talented woman on the planet. It's as simple as that. Yes, the New Pornographers are good, but after listening to it a couple of times, you can easily put it down for a while. The Weakerthans' album still bring forth the same emotions that it did that first listen (I've owned it for roughly right months now). I haven't got tried of it yet.
Anyway, that's my little speech on the Weakerthans, one of my favourite bands. I don't think it makes much sense, but maybe someone will read this and will check them out just because they want to know what the fuck I was going on about. See ya
