My life is like a mash-up track featuring Wilco and Fall Out Boy

There are several reasons why I shouldn't become a teacher and they mostly involve me not being enough of an idealist, which usually isn't a problem with me. I was back in Toronto this weekend, and had drinks with Mac, Eggy, & UFC. The topic of conversation turned to this idea of learning and teaching students how to learn rather than the content. This is the type of stuff they feed us at the University. It's a solid idea, and I understand the arguments surrounding it but I don't feel that it is realistic. I mean, it's an ideal that we, as teachers, should try to attain but I just feel that sometimes you've just to drag some students into learning the minimum. I'm confused and torn about this issue because I feel that I can let the concept get away from me. I want to stay as close to the ground as I possibly can so that once I've got the basics I can move into these more abstract ideas of education. I do, however, think it's a good idea that they're forcing this upon teacher candidates 'cause I sure if it wasn't some would never even consider this.

In other news, I met my girl's mother for the first time. I didn't stab, punch, kick or shot her so I think it went well.

  1. ah, you are wintnessing the death of idealism. it happens. it's supposed to happen. our job is to help them function in, and hopefully change, their society. whether we do that through the aztec, hemingway, or sine curves is irrelevant. what's important is what we do with the content (and to remember they won't remember most of it.

they'll learn to learn. you can't teach it. if you make it interesting, honor where they are at as kids, and try your damndest, they'll learn to learn. i promise.
